What is hospitality? Isn’t that an industry, like hotels, Air BnB, and resorts? Can hospitality possibly be a spiritual practice?

Join our Executive Director, David MacDonald, to explore the concept of hospitality, or the act of welcoming and caring for others as a spiritual practice. We will draw from the wells of ancient spiritual wisdom about hospitality, explore the meaning of the concept in our own lives, and discover the joy of being both a host and a guest wherever we go.

Friday

1:30-3:30 p.m. Arrival and Getting settle in to cabins

3:30 p.m. Gong Fu Style Tea with the Director

4:30 p.m. Afternoon Meditation

5:30 p.m. Dinner

7:00-8:00 p.m. Session 1: Hospitality and Hostility—two approaches to encountering
the stranger. 

Saturday

7:00 a.m. Morning Meditation

7:00-9:00 a.m. Breakfast in Silence

9:30 a.m. Session 2: Hospitality as non-dichotomous act: we are both host and guest simultaneously

10:45 a.m. Break/Tea, Coffee and Cookies

12:00 p.m. Noon Meditation

12:30 p.m. Lunch (with free time until 3 p.m.)

3:00 p.m. Session 3: Hospitality as a spiritual practice: looking at the ancient traditions

4:30 p.m. Afternoon Meditation

5:30 p.m. Dinner

6:30 p.m. Social Gathering—sharing in each other’s company, stories, music, etc.

David is an ordained elder in The United Methodist Church, as well as a Benedictine monk, as a member of the disperse St. Brigid of Kildare monastery.
